The “Development and Marketing Strategies for Birding and Wildlife Tourism in Southern Nevada” report is now complete. A Nevada Commission on Tourism grant funded the project.
The report notes that Nevada compares very well with other states in terms of bird species diversity. As of November 2008, the Nevada state bird list contained 478 species, which puts it in the top ten among U.S.states. Unfortunately, this has not translated into tourism visitation. The 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-associated Recreation shows that Nevada is 32nd in popularity among away-from-home wildlife watchers.
The report recommends regional positioning and branding efforts, offering more birding and wildlife viewing products (i.e. guided tours, themed driving corridors, etc), and improving facilities at existing birding and wildlife viewing sites.
